Imagine walking into an art installation where the pieces don't just hang passively on the walls, but come to life and interact with you. Or perhaps a science museum's dinosaur exhibit where you can use your hands to pan and zoom into prehistoric worlds. These types of immersive installations are becoming an increasingly popular way to present modern art and technology, blurring the lines between observer and participant. A core technology these interactive experiences rely on is computer vision - a field of artificial intelligence (AI) that uses machine learning techniques to derive useful information from digital images. Industrial cameras provide the high-quality visual data that are the basis of these computer vision systems.

Interactive and immersive installations are supported by data from industrial cameras and visual programming.

In conjunction with a customer project, vvvv group integrated The Imaging Source's industrial cameras into their visual programming toolkit, vvvv. Their website describes the vvvv toolkit as a "a visual live-programming environment that takes you from rapid prototyping to final production." The live programming toolkit enables real-time video synthesis and programming for large media environments. Based on IC Imaging Control 4, the package "implements a node-set [...in order to] quickly access the streams of one or multiple cameras in parallel."
